No, you didn’t make a major calendar mistake. It’s not Holy Week quite yet. But I am planning out my Catholic Holy Week books.
But as we make our way through Lent, I’m beginning to prepare for Holy Week. Since my kids are still little (and because it’s crazy around here), I like to keep it simple, which for me, always means books.
So I thought that I’d share with you what books I’m planning on using at our house this year to commemorate this most special week of the year.
Holy Thursday
First up is Holy Thursday. Holy Thursday is when we as Catholics commemorate a few important things, the Institution of the Eucharist being the most important of all.
This new book from Gracie Jagla is absolutely perfect for Holy Thursday because it dives into the mystery and miracle that is the Eucharist. With wonderful cadence and beautiful illustrations, this book is a favorite of my kids all of the time. It’s especially poignant to read during Holy Week though.
Good Friday
As we’ve done every Friday this Lent, we’ll pray the Stations of the Cross here at home with my book from OSV Kids.
We’ll also be reading The Tale of the Three Trees, which is a beautiful book with a message that will make you cry. Seriously, it’s so good. I love that it ties together the entire life of Christ.
Holy Saturday
In addition to pulling out our Marian Consecration for Families with Young Children (because Holy Saturday is a Marian Feast Day!), we’ll be reading the book The Wordless Weaver on Holy Saturday this year.
If you haven’t encountered this book (another amazing one from the OSV Kids line), it’s beautiful. It follows young Shira, a weaver, who offers her best to the Lord despite not being able to speak.
Bonus (and slight spoiler alert): the back of the book has tons of information about the Shroud of Turin.
It’s a perfect read while we wait for the Risen Christ.
Easter
Ever wonder what Easter was like from the perspective of God the Father?
God the Father and the Best Day Ever from Gracie Jagla (can you tell she’s a favorite over here?) will charm your children and get them to think about the Resurrection in a new way.
The illustrations are vibrant (not gonna lie, I love God with purple hair!) and the verse is lyrical. It’s my very favorite Easter book.
